STAR Center Attends National Schools Counselors annual event to promote maritime career awareness in American Schools.

STAR Center attended the American School Counselors Association (ASCA) annual conference in July 2024 held in Kansas City, KS. The conference was attended by attended by over 4500 counselors and school administration staff from around the country. The event provided an opportunity for STAR Center to promote the overall Maritime Industry and our programs.

The general public has little knowledge regarding the maritime industry and the employment careers that are available. STAR Center as a MARAD designated 2024 Center of Excellence along with the American Maritime Officer Union are actively working to provide information to the targeted audience of today’s youth as they develop their career plans and as they enter the workforce. The feedback provided by the school counselor attendees is that today’s students are now trending toward vocational schools and career opportunities instead of a traditional four-year college or university track. STAR Center’s TECH Apprentice Engineering Program fits ideally into this demand space. The TECH Program and its benefits were highlighted to the attendees.

The Maritime Industry is in desperate need of individuals to fill all levels of employment, and all stakeholders need to work together on continuing outreach programs and initiatives that benefit all sectors of the industry. The ASCA is a massive opportunity for the maritime industry to increase maritime domain awareness and find new mariners and employees at all levels through a collaborative effort that benefits all.

The general public does not have knowledge of our industry as a whole. Because of this, it is important to educate and inform everyone about the many avenues to a career in the Maritime Industry. Through events like this and at every opportunity we all need to put the information out that “the Maritime Industry has good jobs waiting for you whatever your goals or education” and highlight the paths and benefits that maritime employment has to offer.
