Veterans Application Information for STAR Center's TECH Program

STAR Center is actively seeking veterans to apply for our 2-year TECH program that will lead to a rewarding second career as a licensed merchant marine engineer officer. As with all interested candidates, there is a rigorous selection process which you must follow, but your service will likely have prepared you for success.

As with any employment, pay and benefits vary, but employment with our affiliated American Maritime Officers (AMO) offers extremely competitive rewards. Please click here to view a short presentation explaining the AMO Advantage.

The merchant marine is different to the military, but the camaraderie and team spirit enjoyed in military life, as well as a hierarchical chain of command, is very familiar to those military personnel who have transitioned. Most work routines involve between 60 and 120 days at sea with an equal period of time off following, so that there is about 6 months at sea annually. However, that work period is demanding, involving 8-12 hours work a day, seven days a week that will likely not deter you. The months at home are an appealing lifestyle choice. On graduation from the program, as a licensed 3rd Assistant Engineer officer, it is reasonable to expect an annual salary of approximately $85,000 plus outstanding medical and pension benefits.

As a veteran, you will have earned a certain level of GI Bill educational benefit as a result of your service. Please click here to go to our Veterans Information page to download, complete and submit the paperwork we need to start to help you with the costs, benefits and liability you may have if you elect to embark on – and are selected – for the TECH program. Our School Certifying Officers (SCO) look forward to helping you

Please click here to return to our TECH Program overview page, read all the information provided carefully and submit the application if you so choose. Clearly state that you are a veteran and insure you call in to speak with an SCO to discuss your GI Bill benefits.

We very much hope to hear from you.
