STAR Center Supporting the Blue Economy

As a MARAD 2021 Center of Excellence for Domestic Maritime Workforce Training and Education (CoE) designee, STAR Center provides direct support to the “Blue Economy” including the renewable energy and ocean transportation sectors.

Working with Crowley Maritime, as well as Crowley New Energy, STAR Center will be supporting the offshore wind sector by providing training for the shipboard officers on their Service Operation Vessels (SOV) that will be crewed by members of American Maritime Officers (AMO). STAR Center provides regulatory required and professional development training in our role as the primary training provider to the USCG credentialed deck and engine officers of AMO.

STAR Center’s Modeling and Research department is also directly involved in supporting the U.S. offshore wind sector through the following projects for our commercial clients and our in-house use:

  • Visual and hydrodynamic modeling of wind turbine “gravity-based structures” (GBS) used in simulations to demonstrate and evaluate the feasibility of towing and navigating these units through the Kill Van Kull waterway safely.
  • Visual and hydrodynamic modeling of the “transportation Installation and maintenance” (TIM) units associated with the GBS as a single unit for additional evaluation.
  • Visual and geographic modeling of offshore wind towers and an offshore wind farm.
  • Development and modeling of WTIV (Wind Turbine Installation Vessel), CTV (Crew Transfer Vessel) and tug & barge support vessels for use in simulation and on STAR Center’s simulators.

We have also developed and produced the STAR Center Offshore Wind Capabilities video. The video highlights STAR Center's capabilities, including our full mission bridge and dynamic positioning simulators along with modeling and research capabilities supporting the emerging offshore wind sector. https://www.star-center.com/windfarmvideo.html

STAR Center also supports the “Blue Economy “ through our core services to the ocean transportation sector. STAR Center provides workforce development to our contracted companies including initial career and ongoing advancement training, courses and programs in order to meet current and anticipated industry needs for well-trained and competent shipboard officers that contribute to the ongoing safe and environmentally sound operation of ships worldwide.
