and Scope of Position
Operate navigational simulators during training and research operations; develop training scenarios in conjunction with customers and instructors; assist instructors in the training and interface with the students. The incumbent must know shipboard terminology and procedures, as well as being familiar with basic computer operation. Good communication skills used during radio communications as well as interfacing with the customer and instructors is required.
Specific
Duties and Responsibilities
·
Operate simulator during training
evolution to provide a realistic training environment and meet the training
objectives of the course.
·
Operate simulator during research
projects and assist in the compilation of test results and report preparations.
·
Prepare bridge and all classrooms for
training by assuring proper charts, plotting instruments, etc. are available,
as well as maintaining inventory on these items.
·
Develop and update simulator scenarios as
required by the course objectives and customer needs.
·
Test simulator exercises, databases, and hydrodynamic
models as assigned by the Operations Manager.
·
Carry out duties in accordance with STAR
Center’s ISO procedures.
·
Maintain inventory of scenarios in system
database as well as published copies.
·
Maintain and update various logs as
assigned by Operations Manager.
·
Take class photos, develop photos, and
distribute as necessary.
·
Carry out collateral duties as assigned
by the Operations Manager for the Modeling and Research, Technical Services,
and Deck departments. These tasks are to
be accomplished when not actively involved in the training or research
operations.

Meets all of his/her assigned
responsibilities relative to the annual Budget Process and all associated
fiduciary responsibilities.

Actively participate and manage all
resources within the context of the Cost Avoidance/ Cost Reduction program,
committed to the concept of Continual Improvement.
Desirable
Education
BS degree with Third
Mate license or equivalent.
Desirable
Experience
One year sailing in a
watchstanding capacity.
Complexity
The position can be very demanding during operations. Incumbent is required to interpret information and anticipate situations in advance and respond correctly for the desired outcome. Role-playing and situation planning is a large part of the operation.
Impact
Of Decision
Many
decisions are made during the running of a course, which will directly affect
the accomplishment of the training objective.
Also, decisions while course preparation is being performed are critical
to the outcome of the training.
This position receives oversight from the Head, Operations and day-to-day assignment by the Operations Manager.
Work
Relationships
Incumbent will work closely with the instructor
and customer while the course is being conducted. He/she will also work closely with the
customer and the course developer when the course is being designed. This individual will also work closely with
the other fellow operators, the Modeling and Research, Deck and the Technical
Services departments as described above.

Work
Environment
While
performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk
or listen. The employee is regularly required to stand; walk; carry textbooks,
use hands to operate a keyboard and push-button panels; and reach with arms or
hands. Specific vision abilities
required by this job include close and far vision and color vision. The temperature level in much of the work
area may be cool due to the requirements of the systems.
